sonki fitness bootcamp

Push-ups. 60 seconds.

“5-4-3-2-1 HOLD! Down an inch…up an inch…down an inch…up an inch…down an inch…HOLD!” Yells the petite, cute former NBA and NFL cheerleader and bootcamp instructor, Katie Mayfield.

The longest 70 seconds of my life.

I was apprehensive to commit physically and financially to a five-week fitness program with Sonki Fitness at first. I had to wake up at 5:30 am three times a week (during my summer) to drive 45 minutes up the 405 for an hour-long bootcamp with, what I imagined, a big group of power walking moms getting their morning crunches in.

I was proven wrong.

Day 1: Initial fitness evaluation
45 Push-Ups (60 Sec)
70 Sit-Ups (60 Sec)
7:01 Min Mile

Obviously, not too much room for improvement. So I thought.

A typical morning with Katie was structured similar to the following:
Warm-up Run
Stretch
Upper Body Strength
Cardio
Lower Body Strength
Cardio
Abs/Core
Cardio
Cool-down

The next five weeks of training pushed my body to its limits. When I thought I was going to collapse on my face, I did one more push-up…when I was unsure if my legs were there during a 60-second wall sit, I pushed through the sprint Katie cued for and got right back on the wall…when I thought my respiratory system was crashing, I sprinted up the hill and passed the athletic man that was always in front of me…when I threw up from working out my first and only time, I jumped right back into the next exercise.

Day 15: Final Fitness Assessment
62 Push-Ups (60 Sec) – 38% Improvement
95 Sit-Ups (60 Sec) – 36% Improvement
6:58 Min Mile – 3 Sec Improvement

Sonki Fitness is not your typical bootcamp with sexy army men trying to act tough. No matter your fitness level, this fitness program will challenge you to your peak performance. Whether you’re fresh off the junk-food-filled couch or you’re an athlete who thinks you don’t have much room for improvement, you are guaranteed to see a dramatic change in your strength, agility, well-being and overall athleticism.

Waking up at 5:30 am three days a week to drive 45 minutes to sweat on that dewy faux grass in that Playa Vista park was the best decision I made all summer.
