Whether you need a break from LA buildings and bumpers or OC surfers and housewives, it's always good to get some peace and quiet away from the busy city. Just about 2 hours and 120 miles east of LA and OC is a Southern California gem: Joshua Tree National Park.
The trail we chose was Ryan Mountain, the tallest point in Joshua Tree. This hike is perfect for beginner and experienced hikers alike. Its steady and steep climb will leave anyone huffing and puffing, but the trail is very evident and almost impossible to get lost on. Either way, once you reach the top, you'll find breathtaking views of the entire park.
Distance: 3 miles roundtrip
Time: 2 hours (depending on how many scenery breaks you take)
Summit Height: 5,461 feet
Getting there:
Whether you're coming from LA or OC, you'll end up on the 10W at some point. Exit on the 62N and follow it through the windmills, Morongo, Yucca Valley and into Joshua Tree. Follow the signs to the West park entrance. Turn right into Joshua Tree National Park and dish out $10 for your week pass.
From there, head toward Sheep's Pass Group Campground, about 12 miles into the park. Park and hop onto the trailhead, which is very obvious.
