hike of the month: temescal canyon loop

Temescal Canyon Loop is a beautiful, short hike located in the Santa Monica Mountains. This trail has it all: breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, green canyons, gorgeous foliage, and a waterfall.
Whether you’re a beginner hiker, extreme trail runner, or just a nature lover, you’ll love every part of this trail and it’s guaranteed to make you SWEAT.

Getting There
From Los Angeles, take the Santa Monica Freeway (10) West until it becomes Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Continue West on PCH. Turn right (North) on Temescal Canyon Road and continue for 1 mile, until it ends. You can park inside Temescal Gateway Park for  $7.00 fee, but let’s not be lazy…you’re going for a hike anyway. Park on Temescal Canyon Road before Sunset Blvd and walk your ass up to the trail head for free.

The Hike
Start left at the trail head. It starts you off with a steep, uphill climb that takes you to a peak with a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean.

Now, the actual Temescal Canyon Loop (4 miles) does not include the infamous Skull Rock, but I highly recommend taking the .5 mile detour to go sit inside an eyeball. It has more gorgeous views and it’s a great place to take a break.

It’s all downhill from here. Enjoy the beautiful foliage on the way back, stop at the waterfall, follow the stream, and finish the loop! More>
